Knowing Your Computer
A. Fill in the blanks:
i) The three terms that is ,input, process and output are interrelated.
ii) The collection of computers connected together for the purpose of sharing information and resources is called a network.
iii) The main computer in the networking environment that controls the functioning of the entire network is called the server.
iv) Modem stands for modulator demodulator.
v) Speed of a modem is calculated in bps.
B. State true or false.
i) A WAN connects computers over a relatively short distance.[F]
ii) When the computers are interconnected to extend over an entire city, then it forms a MAN.[T]
iii) Internet is the best example of a PAN.[F]
iv) Internet stands for interrelated network.[F]
v) Networking is the solution to limited resources and cost reduction.[T]
C. Differentiate between the following:
i) Difference between Server and Workstation:
=
Server | Workstation |
---|---|
i) The main computer which controls all the other computers in a network is called server. |
i) Every individual computers connected to a network is called workstation. |
ii) Server is like the boss or manager of a company. | ii) Workstations are like employees of a company. |
ii) Difference between PAN and LAN:
=
PAN | LAN |
---|---|
i) The computers and devices of the same user are inter connected with PAN. |
i) The computers of an office, school or home are inter-connected with LAN. |
ii) The devices in this type of network are connected through Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. |
ii) The computers in this type of network are connected through cables. |
iii) Difference between Input and Output:
=
Input | Output |
---|---|
i) It is the raw data given to a computer. | i) It is processed data generated and given to the outside world. |
ii) Devices like the keyboard, mouse, and scanner are used to input data. |
ii) Output devices are like the printer, monitor speaker etc. |
iv) Difference between WAN and MAN:
=
WAN | MAN |
---|---|
i) It is a network over a large geographical area that may be within a country. |
i) It is the network over an entire city. |
ii) Satellite is used as a communication channel. | ii) Cable or satellite is used to connect devices. |
D. Give one word for the following:
i) Main computer on a network.
= Server.
ii) Modulator demodulator.
= Modem.
iii) A computer on a network.
= Workstation.
iv) Information flow cycle.
= IPO Cycle.
v) Connects two or more networks.
=Wide Area Network.
E. Answer the following questions:
i) Define the IPO Cycle. Give an example.
= IPO stands for input-Process-Output. The data or information given to the computer with input device and then process that data with processing device and get result through output device. This process is known as IPO Cycle. example:
Multiplication of two numbers:
Input - 5,6
Process - 5*6
Output - 30.
ii) What is the importance of computer network?
= The importance of computer network are:
i) Sharing data and resources.
ii) Saving of money.
iii) Faster communication speed.
iv) Data security.
v) Backup is easy.
iii) What is modem? State its types.
= Modem is a device that enables a computer to transmit data over telephone or cable lines. Computer understands digital(binary) data whereas the telephone line in the form of analogue data. the modem converts digital data to analogue and analogue to digital data.
There are two types of modem: Internal modem and External modem.
iv) Name the four types of networks.
= a) Personal Area Network(PAN)
b) Local Area Network(LAN)
c) Metropolitan Area Network(MAN)
d) Wide Area Network(WAN)
v) Ten different computers are connected in a network in a school. Can you take printout from only one printer using any of the ten computers?
= Yes, we can print from all ten different computers. Because all ten computers and the server are interconnected through a network switch. The print command is received by server and print out comes on the printer attached to the server.
