Weather and Climate
(My World and I)
A. Fill in the Blanks:
1. Changes of weather happens because of changes in the atmosphere.
2. Climate is the usual weather a place has over a long period of time.
3. Altitude has an effect on both weather and climate.
4. Our lives are affected by both weather and climate.

C. Write true or false:
1. The weather can change from day to day.[T]
2. Climate can also change from day to day.[F]
3. People build houses with sloping roofs in Ladakh.[T]
4. The direction of winds of a particular time of the year affects climate.[T]
D. Choose the correct answer:
1. A place that is close to the equator is warmer/cooler than a place that is far away from the equator.
2. Places that are at a high altitude are warmer/cooler than places that are at sea level.
3. In Summer, inland places are warmer/cooler than places that are beside the sea.
4. In Winter places beside the sea are warmer/cooler than inland places.
E. Answer the following questions.
1. What is an important difference between weather and climate?
= Weather can change in a day of from day to day. While climate has a regular pattern of weather that a place has over a long time.
2. Give one example of how the climate affects the way of people live.
= The way we live depends on the climate. For example, the kind of houses that people build depends on the climate of a place.
3. Explain why the latitude of a place affects how hot or cold a place is.
= The equator(latitude of 0°) gets the most direct rays of the sun. The latitude of a place tells us how close or far away it is from the equator. The nearer a place is to the equator, the hotter or warmer it will be. As we move away from the equator, places get cooler because the rays of the sun fall less directly on them.
4. Why does the sea has an effect on the climate of a place?
= Water heats or cools more slowly than land. This is why the sea has an effect on the climate of places that are near it. The sea has an effect on both Summer and Winter.
* In Summer, places far away from the sea, or inland places, are hot because the land heats up very quickly. Places by the sea remain cooler as water takes a long time to heat.
*In winter, places by the sea are warmer, as water cools slowly, so it keeps seaside places warm. Places away from the sea are cold, as land here loses heat very fast.

5. Give an example of how wind affects the climate of a place.
= The direction of the regular winds that blow at a particular time of the year has an effect on climate too. An example is the monsoon winds that blow over Indian subcontinent. The south-west monsoon winds blow from early June to September and bring rain to most of India. the north-east monsoon winds, which blow in December and January, bring rain to the south-eastern coastal region of India.
