1. Why Huck was glad at the beginning of this chapter?
= A man was found drowned at that time in the river and everyone thought it was Huck's father. Huck became glad because his father had beaten him so often and then he was rid of him.
2. What happened to their band of robbers?
= They played at the being robbers for about a month and then the band broke up. They boys were not satisfied. They had not robbed anyone. They had only pretended that they had robbed.
3. What did they used to do while being in the gang of robbers?
= They used to jump out of the woods and make a rush at men driving pigs, and women in carts taking vegetables to market. Tom Sawyer said that the pigs were bars of gold and the vegetables were jewels.
4. What did Tom once tell them?
= Once Tom called a meeting of the gang and said that the next day a band of Arab and Spanish merchants were going to camp near their cave. They had got two hundred elephants, six hundred horses and over a thousand donkeys, all loaded with diamonds.
5. Why it was easy to attack them?
= They would attack them and kill them all and seize the jewels. It would be easy because they had got only four hundred soldiers guarding them.
6. What happened on the next day?
= Next day they were all hiding in the woods waiting for the signal to attack. When that came, they rushed out, down the hill and on to the road. But there were no Arab and Spanish merchants, no elephants, no horses, and certainly no diamonds.
7. Who were there actually in stead of the Arab and Spanish merchants?
= There was only a party of Sunday-school children going on a picnic. They chased the children and seized their cakes. Then their teachers rushed at us so that they had to drop everything and run.
8. What was Tom's opinion about the school children?
= Tom explained that it was all done by the magicians as they did not like them. So they changed everything into a Sunday-school outing just to disappoint them.
9. What if they attacked the magicians?
= If they tried to attack the magicians they had call up a lot of devils who could cut them into little pieces before they could say 'Jack Robinson'.
10. How do the magicians spell the devils?
= The magicians just rub an old lamp or an iron ring and the devils come rushing in, with thunder and lighting and clouds of smoke. And they say that master we have come to carry out your command.
11. What can they order them to do according to Tom Sawyer?
= According to Tom Sawyer, they could order them to build a castle for you or to fetch an Emperor's daughter from China for you to marry. Whatever they command, they would do, and they would do it before sunrise next morning.
12. What did Huck do to get proof about the devils?
= Huck got an got an old tin lamp and an iron ring and rubbed and rubbed till he was sweating like a horse. But not a single devil turned up. Tom Sawyer had just imagined it all because of the books that he had read.
