D. Answer these questions.
1. What is the importance of the Constitution of India?
= India won its freedom from the British rule on 15 August 1947. Under the foreign rule, the colonial rulers had their own set of rules and regulations which helped them govern the country. The Constitution Assembly was formed in 1946 to draft country's own constitution.
2. What do you mean by the Directive Principle of the State Policies? List five Directive Principles.
= The Constitution of India has laid down some important guidelines for the government to make policies for the welfare and well-being of the people. These guidelines are called Directive Principles of State Policy.
Five Directive Principles are -
❐ The government should make sure that its citizens have good living conditions.
❐ All children should get free and compulsory education up to the age of fourteen.
❐ The government must provide equal wages for equal amount of work.
❐ Monuments and other places of historical significance and wildlife should be preserved.
❐ Every body has the right to work and education.
3. What are Fundamental Rights? List any three of them.
= The Constitution of India provides all its citizens with certain rights. These rights cannot be denied to anyone by law. They are called Fundamental Rights.
Three Fundamental Rights are -
❐ Right to equality :- All citizens are equal in India irrespective of their caste, religion, place or gender.
❐ Right to freedom of religion :- All citizens have the liberty to practise and follow the religion of their own choice.
❐ Cultural and educational rights :- Every community or group has the right to practise, protect and preserve their own culture. Children must receive free and compulsory education up to the age of fourteen.
4. State six Fundamental Duties of the Indian citizens.
= Six Fundamental Duties of the Indian citizens are -
❐ We must abide by the law.
❐ We must honour/respect our national flag and our national anthem.
❐ We must treat everyone equally and respect each other.
❐ We must not engage in violence.
❐ We must take care of our natural environment, monuments and public property.
❐ We must defend the country in times of danger.
5. What is Preamble? What does the Preamble to the Indian Constitution describe India as?
= The Indian Constitution has a Preamble or a brief introductory statement.
The Preamble to the Indian Constitution describes that India is a Sovereign, Socialist, Secular and Democratic Republic.
