1. What is an industry? Name three types of industries.
= Industries transform the natural resources and the agricultural raw materials into finished products that can be used directly by the consumers.
Three types of industries are - i) Large-scale industries, ii) Small-scale industries, and iii) Cottage industries.
2. Distinguish between large-scale and small-scale industries.

3. What are the factors important for setting up an industry?
= The factors needed to establish an industry are -
❐ Availability of raw materials :- Availability of raw materials is the primary requirement for establishing an industry in a region.
❐ Availability of power :- Cheap and uninterrupted power supply is a must for the smooth running of the manufacturing process in an industry.
❐ Availability of good network of transport :- The transport of raw materials to the factory is an absolute requirement for any industry. The finished products from the factory also have to sent to the market for sale.
❐ Availability of finance (capital) :- Apt financial investment or capital is one of the most important factors for the setting up of an industry.
❐ Availability of suitable machinery and human resources :- Efficient machinery is required to be installed for the effective running of all processes in and industry to produce the finished products.
4. What is meant by cottage industry? Give two examples.
= Industries that require less capital investment, no specialised machineries and are run by traditional skilled artisans at home with the help by their family members are known as cottage industries.
Two examples of cottage industries are - handloom and pottery.
5. How are industries classified according to raw materials used?
= In the following ways industries are classified according to raw materials used :-
❐ Agro-based : Industry which uses agricultural produce as raw materials is called agro-based industry. for example - cotton textile industry.
❐ Mineral-based : Industry which uses minerals such as coal, iron and mica as raw materials is called mineral-based industry. for example - cement industry.
❐ Forest-based : Industry which uses forest products as their raw materials is called forest-based industry. for example - wood is used in paper, pencil and furniture industries.
❐ Pastoral : Industry which uses animal products as raw materials is called pastoral industry. for example - woollen textile industry.
