D. Answer these questions.
1. What do you mean by natural resources? Give examples.
= Natural resources are raw materials that we get from the Earth to make other products.
For example, wind is a natural resource. We generate electricity from the wind using windmills.
2. Distinguish between renewable and non-renewable natural resources. Give three examples each.
=
Renewable Resources |
Non-Renewable Resources |
---|---|
1. Natural resources that can be replenished are known as renewable
resources. |
1. Non-renewable resources are those resources that have been
accumulated in nature over a long period of time and cannot be replaced
sooner when exhausted. |
2. These resources can be used multiple times and are plenty in
nature. |
2. They are available in limited amount on Earth and can be exhausted
due to overuse. |
3. They do not pollute the environment. |
3. They pollute the environment while being used. |
3. What do you mean by ores?
= Minerals from which metals are obtained are called ores.
4. State the differences between metallic and non-metallic minerals.
=
Metallic Minerals |
Non-Metallic Minerals |
---|---|
1. Metals are hard and strong. |
1. Non-metals are soft and can be broken easily. |
2. They have lustre. |
2. They are dull. |
3. They are good conductors of heat and electricity. |
3. They are bad conductors of heat and electricity. |
4. Metals are malleable or can be moulded into different shapes
easily. |
4. Non-metals are not malleable and may break easily. |
5. Why should we conserve our resources? List the ways in which we can conserve them.
= We need to conserve our natural resources for the future generations.
We can conserve them by following the steps below :
❐ Plant more trees and save our forests.
❐ Save water by using it cautiously.
❐ Not pollute our water bodies.
❐ Save electricity by switching off the electrical gadgets after use.
❐ Not pollute the air by reducing the usage of fossil fuels.
❐ Use alternative sources of energy.
Picture Study
Look at the picture and answer the questions.
1. What type of natural resource is being shown here?
= Solar energy is being shown here.
2. How is this resource useful to us?
= Plants prepare their food by using this energy. It can be used for cooking and to generate electricity.
3. What will happen if we run out of this resource?
= If we run out of this resource, the whole world will come to a crisis. Trees would not be able to produce food by conducting photosynthesis. All the other necessary things would not be produced. The whole world would be destroyed.
