2. Solar and Wind Power are clean fuels.
3. Soil is the top layer of the earth's surface in which plants and trees grow.
4. Coal and Petroleum are fossil fuels.
5. Petroleum is purified in refineries.
B. Write true or false.
Correct the false statements in your notebook.
1. Renewable resources have a limited supply. [F]
= Renewable resources have an unlimited supply.
2. Seas and oceans are the main sources of fresh water. [F]
= Monsoon Rain is the main source of fresh water.
3. Mica and limestone are metallic minerals. [F]
= Mica and limestone are non-metallic minerals.

1. A large wall build across rivers:
= Dam.
2. The process by which the topmost layer of soil is removed:
= Soil Erosion.
3. Cutting of trees in large numbers:
= Deforestation.
4. A fuel that has formed from the remains of living organisms:
= Fossil Fuels.

E. Answer the following questions.
1. What do you understand by a natural resource?
= Things that we get directly from nature are called resources. These resources are land, water, plants, animals, minerals and people. They are gifts given by nature.
2. What is the difference between renewable and non-renewable resources? Give examples.
=
Renewable Resources |
Non-renewable Resources |
---|---|
1.Renewable resources are those that nature can replace.
They are also free and some, like sunlight or air, are unlimited. |
1. Non-renewable resources are those of which there
is limited supply. Once used, they cannot be replaced. They need to be used
wisely. |
2. Example – Water, Solar, Air etc. |
2. Example – Coal, Petroleum etc. |
3. Why is soil precious and important?
= The soil needs to be protected by planting more trees. It should also be protected form harmful chemicals that are sometimes used by farmers to grow better crops.
4. What are fossil fuels?
= Fossils are ancient remains of animals and plants; a fuel is something that burns to produce hear and power. Coal, oil and natural gas are fossil fuels as they were formed over millions of years from fossils. They are used to produce energy.
5. Give an example, with a flow diagram, of the interconnection of animals and people.
= People and animals are interconnected to maintain the balance of nature. You can see this in the flow diagrams here.
Earthworms live underground, making tiny burrows.
↓
Their droppings make the soil fertile and their burrowing mixes the soil.
↓
Plants and crops can grow well.
Snakes are killed.
↓
The population of rats rises.
↓
Stored food grains are eaten or damaged by the rats.
