= Some industries do not make anything, but they do specific work for their customers. These are called service industries. An example is the tourism industry which includes hotels, transportation services like taxis, etc.
5. Name some major industries in India. Write two sentences about any three.
= The major industries in India are -
Iron and Steel :- This is a vital industry as steel is required for so many other industries. Bhilai, Rourkela and Bokaro have large, government-owned steel mills.
Cement :- This is vital for the construction industry. Limestone is one of the chief raw materials in the manufacture of cement. Cement factories are located in many parts of India.
Sugar :- India is one of the largest consumers of sugar in the world. There are hundreds of sugar mills in several parts of the country.
Paper :- Paper is very widely used, so it is produced in many centres. The north-east is one of the regions where paper is made.
Information Technology (IT) :- India has a large IT industry. It provides various services to many parts of the world through computers and the Internet. Bengaluru and Hyderabad are two big centres of the IT industry.
Communication and Entertainment :- This includes media like television, newspapers and magazines and the film industry. The biggest centre for this is Mumbai but there are other important centres too, like Chennai, New Delhi and Hyderabad.
