Section B (Subjective)
A. Short answer type questions:
1. What is the full form of modem?
= Modulator and demodulator.
2. Name the types of scanners.
= Hand-held scanner and Flat-bed scanner.
3. Can a mouse and keyboard be wireless?
= Yes, a mouse and keyboard can be wireless.
4. What do you mean by virtual keyboard?
= A virtual keyboard is operated by typing on a detectable surface rather than pressing physical keys. It is actually a software component because it is not a physical part.
5. What does CD-RW stand for?
= CD-RW stands for Compact Disk Rewritable.
6. What is Skylake?
= Intel's multi-core chip, code-named Skylake boosts graphics and applications while improving battery life in laptops.
B. Long answer type questions:
1. What is the difference between input and output devices?
= Computer accepts data and instructions through input devices. Data can be in the form of numbers, text, sound, or graphics. Example - Mouse, Keyboard, Microphone etc.
On the other hand, output is the information obtained after processing of data. The user receives the result through output devices. Example - Monitor, Speaker, Printer etc.
2. What is the role of the CPU?
= CPU (Central Processing Unit) is a processor sometimes called a microprocessor. It is the brain of the computer that does all the calculations and runs all the programs. It manages all the operations and carries out the basic instructions that operate a computer.
3. Name the different types of modem. Explain them briefly.
= Modems are of two types: internal modems and external modems.
An internal modem is located inside the CPU box just like the motherboard plate.
On the other hand, an external modem is a separate device that you can connect to the computer with the help of a USB port. It generally contains indicators in the form of small lights.
4. What do you mean by ports in a computer system? Write the names of any three types of ports.
= Computer ports are an interface between the computer and peripheral devices like mouse, keyboard, monitor, printer, speaker, flash drive, pen drive etc.
The names of three types of ports are - Serial Ports, Universal Serial Bus (USB) Ports and Parallel Ports.
5. List the different types of CDs and write their brief description.
= Different types of CDs are -
❐ CD-ROM (Compact Disc Read Only Memory): A CD-ROM is a CD that contains data that was written when the CD was manufactured. The data cannot be modified or erased.
❐ CD-R (Compact Disc Recordable): A CD-R can be used to write data by the used only once. This data cannot be changed or erased.
❐ CD-RW (Compact Disc Rewritable): A CD-RW can be used to write data again and again. The data can be erased and modified as many times as required.
❐ Digital Versatile or Video Disc (DVD): DVD or Digital Versatile/Video Disc is an optical disc which looks like a CD but has capacity to store data up to 17.1 GB. To read information stored in a DVD, it has to be inserted into a DVD ROM or DVD Writer or DVD plyer (to copy information on a DVD, one has to use a DVD writer).
C. Competency-based/Application-based questions:
1. Akhil is an artist. He makes a drawing on paper and then scans the drawing to save it to the computer. After opening the scanned drawing, he realised that he cannot edit the drawing. Now, he decided to draw directly on the computer screen. As a good friend, suggest him a device that he can use to do this.
= As a good friend, I would suggest him to use a Graphics Tablet. It allows user to directly draw on a computer screen. The device consists of a flat surface upon which you can draw with an attached stylus, that look like a pen.
2. Divya is the owner of a printing press. She wants to start a new project to print good quality drawings and building construction plans. But she has no idea what kind of printer she will need to do this. Suggest which printer she should buy.
= I would suggest Divya to use a Plotter. It is an output device that helps in printing high quality poster, flex, visuals, charts, graphs, tables and diagrams, etc. It can draw continuous lines and can produce output on paper, polyester film or coloured transparencies.
